LIE FHUNG: flight
FEBRUARY 16 - MARCH 12, 2005
CP ARTSPACE, JAKARTA

An Introduction
By Jim Supangkat

Born in Jakarta in 1969, Lie Fhung has been active in the art world since her early childhood. As a child and teenager, she won numerous prizes in various children's drawing competitions, at both national and international level.

In 1994, she graduated from Institute of Technology Bandung, with a major in Fine Arts (Ceramics). She then held a solo exhibition, 'Krisis', in Bandung and later in Jakarta in 1995, and participated in joint exhibitions in subsequent years. During these years, she divided her time between ceramics, graphic design and jewelry making. She also worked as an English translator for 'Galeri Padi' in Bandung.

Towards the end of 1998, her drive to explore brought her to Shanghai and then Hong Kong to work as a toy designer. She traveled a lot in her job, to China, the U.S. and Europe - which proved to be a valuable experience for her development. However, she finally yearned to break free from the conventions and limitations of the corporate world. There was this constant urge to create, to set free her anxious restlessness. She felt like her real life has been put on hold, it was actually happening elsewhere - somewhere nearby yet untouchable.

So she gave up her full time job by the end of 2002 to pursue her artistic calling. It took her a while to center herself. In 2003 she set up a small home studio in Hong Kong and started to make things. Besides her affinity to ceramic, especially porcelain, she is interested in exploring other materials and techniques such as book and box making, wire and metal work, etc. which is evident in her current work.

In December 2004, she participated in a joint ceramic exhibition at the National Gallery of Indonesia in Jakarta: her first exhibition in almost a decade. This February, she is having two exhibitions: a group exhibition at Nadi Gallery and a solo exhibition at the CP artspace.

Lie Fhung prefers the term 'artist' or 'contemporary artist' than 'ceramic artist' as she found the latter to be a restriction. She likes to explore other materials and techniques, to move fluidly across the material boundaries; merging and weaving them together to create her own artistic language.
